Patrick Lally

BSc (Hons) in Agriculture

“The best thing about DkIT for me was winning ‘Best Up and Coming Society’ at the DkIT Sports and Societies Awards"

Patrick Lally is a 3rd year BSc (Hons) in Agriculture student from Kilmessan, Co. Meath.

“I heard about DkIT through our Career Guidance Counsellor in school. I have always had a strong interest in Agriculture so I knew that that was the area that I wanted to go down. From my research, I liked the modules on offer at DkIT and the partnership with the Teagasc Ballyhaise Agricultural College in Cavan. That’s why I decided to put it down as my first choice. I attended DkIT’s open day when I was in 6th year and I liked the campus because it is relatively small and the accommodation is close by."

Patrick's favourite part about the course is the variation between the practical and the theoretical.

"I feel like we get a nice mix between learning what we need to know and then getting out and applying it in real situations in the Teagasc Ballyhaise Agricultural College.”

In first and second year, BSc (Hons) in Agriculture students typically spend 3 days in Ballyhaise and 2 days in DkIT.

"During these first two years, we were exposed to a lot more practical based hands on learning through the Teagasc Ballyhaise Agricultural College in Cavan and their facilities."

Now, in his third year, Patrick confirms that the course is a lot more theory-based with a stronger focus on academic modules.

"We spend 3 days in DkIT and just 1 day in Ballyhaise now."

For Patrick, the work placement was a big attraction to choosing the course.

"We go on placement in the second semester in second year for between 8 to 12 weeks. We also get to go on another internship on the second semester of third year too. This was definitely something that influenced me picking my course because it gives you an opportunity to go out and get added experience and work on farms and within other sectors of the agricultural sector.”

During term time, Patrick resides in Dundalk,

"I live in student accomodation which is located really close to the college and it means I don't have to communte every morning and evening which suits me."

Best thing about DkIT?

“The best thing about DkIT for me was winning ‘Best Up and Coming Society’ at the DkIT Sports and Societies Awards night. This year myself and a few of the lads set up the Ag Society. It’s been a great experience and has allowed us to meet new people and start a community of people within DkIT who are interested in Ag. We’ve also had the opportunity to set up and run our own event which was another great opportunity and learning experience and something all of us can add to our CV. We donated all of the funds raised from our event to Embrace Farm which is a charity that helps provide bereavement support for farm families. Not only did we gain valuable experience from organising, planning and running our own event but we helped a very important cause.”
